Lyrics for Long Road In Time

1. I NEED TO   Maybe it's too early to say, Maybe it's too late and it's all been said before I get a chance to catch my breath, I ll repeat it/ It might be I'm too hungry for love, It might be I'm too full and I just can't taste it, Before I lose my appetite, I'll try to feed it, cause I need to/ I've got alot of words I keep holding on to, Some of them I got from the books you learned to hate, still I need some way to say what I’m feeling, Cause I need to/ I need to say some words you've never heard before, I need to find some way to strike that inner chord, I need to touch you in a place you've never felt before, Cause I need to…/ I've got alot of words I keep holding on to, Some of them I got from the books you’ve learned to hate, Still I need some way to say what I’m feeling, cause I need to/ Maybe I'm too close to see, You seem so far away while I'm right beside you, Before my eyes go blind from crying, I'll keep trying, cause I need to    (May1993)

2. WHERE YOU ARE TONIGHT    Cats in the cradle, Harry’s gone home, The kids came home for Christmas/ Mom and Dad, over the rainbow somewhere high/ Still I lie here…in the dark… wondering where you are tonight/ Let’s play war, Throw bags of sand, Balloons for water bombs/ Build a fort, Use moms white sheets, chisels make great tent pegs/ Still I lie here…in the dark… wondering where you are tonight/ I sometimes dream about those sad sorry songs/ Eyes wide open thinking what went wrong/ I know I can’t go back and make it right/ Still I lie herein the dark… wondering where you are tonight/ Smoking leaves behind the shed, Donny took Daddy’s pipes/ Me and Anne walking to school, My initials on her running shoes/ Still I lie here…in the dark… wondering where you are tonight/ Story books and fairy tales, In and out of dreams/ Eyes wide open and grateful that love sleeps next to me/ I sometimes dream about those sad sorry songs/ Eyes wide open thinking what went wrong/ I know I can’t go back and make it right/ Still I lie here…in the dark… wondering where you are tonight     (April 2005)

3. WOUNDED TREE  Wounded Tree what happened to your leaves/ Sad sad house why does the cat run from the mouse/ Wide open to the staring/ All those eyes on me/ Sacred Church so many people have been hurt/ Gouvernement telling us how things must run/ Wide open to the staring/ All those eyes on me/ Miles away from caring/ As we pass on the street/ True blue sky show me more than meets the eye/ Bright white light wash away these sorry sights/ Wide open to the staring/ All those eyes on me/ Miles away from caring/ As we pass on the street/ Miles away from sharing …Wounded Tree   (Jan 2006)

4. COMMON GROUND   Starry night fall, ancient wind overhead/ starry light falling over my eyes/ So sunny can’t wait for a starry night fall/ A sudden mist come rising over hill there/ Forming shapes and shadows for me/ So sudden,  I’m startled by the spectre/ So sudden,  too startled to see/ A common ground…/ a common ground in a stream of light/ A little child crying out, over there/ I’m sorry but my eyes won’t see/ I can hear it but I can’t see past the light/ So sorry but it’s much too bright for me/ What you thinkin’, tell me what you’re feelin’/ I wanna know, but say it with a big smile…/ Can you hurry, I really must be leavin’…/ A common ground, a common ground in a stream of light/ ...Starry Nights    (Feb 1997)

5. BARELY AWAKE    Oh I’m barely awake when all the noise comes rushing to my head/ I’m too tired to fight a clock that tries to drag me out of my bed/ If I hide, the telephone finds me, tells me where I have to go/ Who I need to know, who to say hello to, and who to ignore/ Sometimes I close my eyes, I imagine I found a new world/ Where my money’s no good , There’s nothing to own and I love/ Oh I’m wary… I can’t jump in no more/ I’m so tired, I can’t think anymore/ If I hide, the telephone finds me, tells me where I have to go/ Who I need to know, who to say hello to, and who to ignore/ Sometimes I close my eyes, I imagine I found a new world/ Where my money’s no good, There’s nothing to own and I love/ …everyone  (June 2000)

6. HOW CAN I MEASURE   In a moment I stopped the clock/  To look at years removed/  Seems like it was just yesterday /  When my eyes fell on you/  I can see now the best of you/ And I'm sure you feel the same/  We're more aware of love/  We've something to say/  How can I measure how much I love you/  Writing feelings to words in a song/  When like music our love is growing/  Sometimes it feels like heaven/  Sometimes it feels so long/ Each time I look in your eyes/ There's one thing I can count on/ My heart will rest in your hands/ Together time will stand still/  Somehow I know my heart is safe/ And our love is strong/  How can I measure…/  Ultimates last a moment and greats must pass away/ Crimes may lose their victims/ But my love for you will stay/ ...Sometimes it feels like heaven/   How can I measure…  (July 1989)

7. QUEEN RULES THE LAND   The king lives in solitude, The queen rules the land, The prince loves another one, while the princess leaves his hand, The people love the princess, Like they she understands, That the king lives in solitude while the queen rules the land (March 2004)

8. MORE THAN THE YEARS    There's only one thing I know for sure/ My love for you rests in a tear/ If only you'd listen to what you hear/ Woman I love you more than the years/ Just start believing and trust in your heart/ My love for you hasn't stopped/ Will you wait 'til the time you let go/ My love for you lady still has to show/ There's only one thing…/ They say time mends all broken hearts/ Woman I know  we're waiting to start/ What you want more than anything else/ Is to be my sweet lady, don't push me away/ There's only one thing…/ Don't keep away girl there's room in that heart/ My love for you hasn't stopped/ They say time mends all broken hearts/ Woman I know  we're  waiting to start/ There's only one thing...Woman I love you more than the years…    (Jan 1989)

9. WAS IT THE SURPRISE   Give me your smile/ Wink for me like you do/ Give me your hand/ We’ll sit for awhile/ Then we’ll kick off our shoes / Take a walk where the wild won’t follow/ I’ll look at the ground/ You’ll look all around/ My hands covered your eyes/ You laughed, then we both started crying/ Was it just the surprise    (Aug 2004)

10. NEVER BEEN    I've never been to New York City, I've never been to Rome/ I've never climbed the Eiffel Tower, or walked the Berlin Wall/ I've never sat in the oval office, I've never met the Queen/ I've never fed a Third World country, or armed a small regime/ But that's me...I guess I've never been/ I've never flown to a summit meeting, or fought a " desert storm "/ I've never been to a public rally, I'd rather stay at home/ I've been around this globe, east and west, I've seen it on T.V./ I'd be afraid to run for politics, I guess they’ve never been/ But that's me, I guess I've never been/  I watched 2 wars made for television/ Wars that no one wins/ mmmmmmm/ I've never been to New York City, I've never been to Rome/ I've never climbed the Eiffel Tower, or walked the Berlin wall/ But that's me...I guess...I've never been/ But that's me       (May 1991)

11. LONG ROAD IN TIME    It’s been a long road in time/ a long road in time, forever and some/ So many lives/ So many knights left to die/ One call…Your voice…/ Your place…we had no choice/ Caught with a smile/ Total surprise, no compromise/ Slaves to hungry eyes/ Where have you been, where have you gone/ When I fall into your eyes/ Oceans blue, oceans deep/ I care not what brought you home/ Now I kneel before my queen, before our throne/ Back from the battles/ Back to the arms of my betrothed/ Back to the soul that makes me whole…again/ Where have you been, where have you gone/ What have you learned, what have you seen/ When I fall into your eyes/ Oceans blue, oceans deep, with you I weep        (Ric Lafontaine/Elly Parker Oct 2000)
